Scraps and Leftovers

Image
I  have been eyeing my basket of leftover scraps because it started to flow over .  I decided to do something about it. Nothing like a squirrel to get you to move.  So I thought of wonky log cabins , since I had a lot of strips of different  lengths and widths. I also used some small leftover blocks and larger leftover backing pieces to make a backing for it! I also made another  yellow block for RSC21. Be safe and be kind! Martha.  Linking up with   sew and stitch week 5  ,  Wendy's Quilts and More , Confessions of a Fabric Addict ,  Quilty Girl  ,  Quilting Patchwork  ,  So Scrappy  ,  Oh Scrap ,  Kathy's Quilts .

Another One Done

Image
I finished another quilt top using my 2 1/2" strips. I made twelve blocks , three rows of four and then wanted to make it a little bit wider as it only finished at 48 1/2" wide. Didn't want a border all the way around.  Didn't want it to look fenced in. So I decided to make a border only on one side. I had plenty of 2 1/2" and 4 1/2" strips left and decided to make a 4 1/2" extra border using them. I have the backing sewn together, as I somehow have an abundance still of fat quarters of flannel left in my scraps. I will be taking this top to the quilter's today! I also began another top with these 12 1/2" blocks. I will be working on these later today, keeping busy and still working on that 2 1/2" bin! Thanks for stopping and taking a look at my day! Martha.

Working Backwards

Image
I have been looking for a pattern and a quilt top for over a week. At this point and time still have not found it. From all the searching,  I thought I should finish up some of the old projects and get them out of the way. It is hard not to start something new, when you feel that urge. So I decided I must finish one thing old,  before I can do some thing new. We'll see how long that lasts! I recently tried something new with foods and it was delicious! I highly recommend this. There are several others we may later try. It makes way too much for just me and hubby, so next time I will cut in half.   I finished this Pat Speth pattern of Jacob's Ladder block. I had started this in a class with her from our guild. This is using my scraps in five inch squares.  And yes I put it on top of the snow on my deck.  It is a small lap quilt. It will be donated for charity.               I pieced together a backing ...

Working Hard

Image
I have been working hard to catch up on "Autumn Love" so that I would be ready for next Monday's clues. I have gotten my last two autumn stars finished.... I then put my applique scarecrow block together and have been working on the embroidery and applique ,  but have not finished yet. Last night I finally got all 28 -  - 4 1/2" stars finished! Now I just have to get fabrics and templates out and ready for Monday! WHEW!!!! Chatter later, Martha.

Giving It My Best Shot

Image
I have block #1 and block #2 ironed onto their backing square... So now I need to stitch them down. That will be my handwork for in front off the telly for those Pawn Stars, Shippers , Pickers, and History Channel war dramas. (That I cannot stand)  Mr. Sew What controls the remote!  I then started sewing the alternate blocks and finished two of the four.... when I took a break to go out and get the mail and put the clothes into the dryer from the washer.  Look what I got in the mail today.... #3. I guess I need to try a little harder, Martha.

Tool Time

Image
While on my visit to Illinois I was blessed by a trip to three quilt stores.  Each very different in location , merchandise, and owners. I learned quite a bit and enjoyed each very much for different reasons.  I would like to share some of my perchases.  The first is a tool that is going to help me control my scraps which are overflowing my container and spreading out. It  starts out as a ruler or template which comes in more than one size.     It is used with right 90* degree triangle papers (which also comes in more than one size co-ordinating with the rulers) It is very thin and tears away easily. Bonnie Hunter uses old phone books and cuts her own foundations.  And that is what this is a  foundation.  I am cutting my kite shapes from black scraps, not necessarily solid, but mainly reads black. I just randomly pick scraps from my bin. They do not have to be straight nor are they the same width or length. The black kite ...

Gudrun Eurla of G.E. Designs

Image
Gudrun Eurla will be teaching a class for our guild tomorrow and then  speaking in front of our guild later in the evening. We are all looking forward to hearing her. I will take her class also as I have one of the best bosses and has let her entire staff go to this while she mans the store. I have my bobbins wound and most of my stuff packed. However I would like to clean and blow out my machine before I pack it up. I have finished another embroidery block.... I have exchanged my month of September with another for this month on our block exchange for our guild.  I have some pics to show you.  The block I picked was from Bonnie Hunter's book " String Fling "  .   Sew several bright strips in varying sizes ( from 3/4" to 2" ) together. Each strip must be at least 8" long. Then press all seams in one direction. Cut one end even, making sure to get all selvages off. Even though I was sewing straight lengths of fabric, I turned my ruler so...

Been A While

I finally got my hexie lap quilt to a quilter, thought it deserved a chance to be out in the open.   Then I finally finished my hand applique project and took it along too! I have a few pics to show you... I can hardly wait until I get it back!  I did get back my scrappy trip around the world with a half a jelly roll. I have  it bound and ready. I have three rabbits on one corner and two on the opposite corner. I am also making some storage  holders for patterns. I have one finished and another cut and ready to go. Chit chat more later,Martha.
